World Trophy Soccer - Can I recreate this in FIFA 20? For Club, Country, and the Soccer Superbowl!
Two years ago I did a blog on European Club Soccer, a game released by Virgin Games on the Sega Mega Drive in 1992.
With the UEFA European Championships and the Copa America on this month, they got me on to the idea of recreating World Trophy Soccer, the North American variant of ECS which has international teams, in FIFA 20.
Below are the countries I'm using. Where I can, I will use the same teams as in WTS:
Austria - Europe
Belgium - Europe
Brazil - South America
Bulgaria - Europe
Cameroon - Africa
Canada - North America
Colombia - South America
Czech Republic (Czechoslovakia in WTS) - Europe
Denmark - Europe
Egypt - Africa
England - Europe
Finland - Europe
France - Europe
Germany - Europe
Ireland (Eire in WTS) - Europe
Italy - Europe
Mexico - North America
Netherlands (Holland in WTS) - Europe
Norway - Europe
Paraguay - South America
Romania (Rumania in WTS) - Europe
Scotland - Europe
Slovenia (Yugoslavia in WTS) - Europe
Spain - Europe
United States - North America
Uruguay - South America
Wales - Europe
There are 2 African teams missing in FIFA 20. Algeria was replaced with Cote D'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), and Morocco with South Africa. This is because they were the only 2 remaining African international teams available in FIFA 20.
Asia has both of its teams missing, so I replaced Japan with China PR, and South Korea with India.
Round 1 pulled out the following matches:
Brazil vs Egypt
Wales vs China PR (Japan)
Spain vs South Africa (Morocco)
Belgium vs Denmark
Netherlands vs Ireland
Scotland vs United States
Slovenia (Yugoslavia) vs England
Paraguay vs Cote D'Ivoire (Algeria)
Mexico vs Romania
Czech Republic (Czechoslovakia) vs Finland
Austria vs India (South Korea)
Canada vs Uruguay - the battle of the Americas!
Colombia vs Italy
Cameroon vs Norway
Germany vs Argentina - One of the favourites will be going home early!
Bulgaria vs France
Results:
Brazil 4-1 Egypt
Wales 2-3 China PR (Japan)
Spain 6-0 South Africa (Morocco)
Belgium 1-1 Denmark - Denmark win on away goals
Netherlands 4-0 Ireland
Scotland 0-4 United States
Slovenia (Yugoslavia) 1-3 England
Paraguay 2-2 Cote D'Ivoire (Algeria) - Paraguay win on away goals
Mexico 5-4 Romania
Czech Republic (Czechoslovakia) 4-2 Finland
Austria 4-1 India (South Korea)
Canada 0-9 Uruguay
Colombia 2-5 Italy
Cameroon 1-3 Norway - All African teams are eliminated in the first round!
Germany 2-2 Argentina - Germany win on away goals
Bulgaria 0-6 France
Round 2:
Netherlands vs Czech Republic (Czechoslovakia)
England vs Germany - 1966 all over again!
Spain vs Italy
Uruguay vs France
Mexico vs Denmark
Austria vs China PR (Japan) - The only Asian team remaining!
Paraguay vs Brazil - an all South American affair!
United States vs Norway
Results:
Netherlands 4-2 Czech Republic (Czechoslovakia)
England 2-2 Germany - England win on away goals
Spain 3-2 Italy
Uruguay 1-4 France
Mexico 0-5 Denmark
Austria 6-0 China PR (Japan) - We've lost all of our Asian teams!
Paraguay 1-5 Brazil
United States 1-3 Norway - We've lost all of our North American teams!
Quarter Finals:
Netherlands vs England
Spain vs France - the neighbours clash!
Denmark vs Austria
Brazil vs Norway - Brazil are the only non-European team left!
Results:
Netherlands 2-0 England - Do I not like Orange!
Spain 1-2 France
Denmark 3-0 Austria
Brazil 3-2 Norway
Semi Finals:
Denmark vs Brazil - surely a gimme for Brazil!
France vs Netherlands - My head says France but my heart says Holland!
Results:
Denmark 0-3 Brazil
France 6-2 Netherlands
Final:
Brazil vs France - a rematch of the 1998 World Cup Final!
Result:
Brazil 1-4 France - France win by the same goal difference as 1998!
Congratulations to France, winners of WTS 2020! However, it's not over yet, because they've qualified for the Soccer Superbowl! I kid you not, this actually happens in the game, and you play against a World All Stars team!
Having not unlocked any All Star teams in FIFA 20, I decided France should play the best club team, determined by the winner of a World Club Soccer tournament!
Where I can, I picked the best team from every country, with WTS countries getting first priority. Where the European countries have teams in ECS, I picked the best teams in FIFA 20 from those teams in ECS. In some instances, this meant that the best team for that country didn't get selected because they weren't in ECS. For example, Paris St. Germain for France.
I was left over with more European countries than slots I had left, so I prioritised non-European countries to fill those remaining slots to give it an authentic worldwide tournament feel. However, all European countries in WTS have representation.
The teams selected were:
Ajax (Netherlands)
Al Ahli (Saudi Arabia)
Al Ain FC (United Arab Emirates)
America de Cali (Colombia)
AS Monaco (France) - I had a couple of options, but seeing Monaco is also a country, I chose them.
Buenos Aires (Argentina)
Cardiff City (Wales)
Celtic (Scotland)
Club Brugge (Belgium)
Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia - Yugoslavia)
FC Barcelona (Spain)
FC Bayern (Germany)
FC Midtjylland (Denmark)
FC Seoul (South Korea)
FCSB (Romania)
Gremio (Brazil)
Guangzhou (China PR)
HJK Helsinki (Finland)
Kaizer Chiefs (South Africa)
LAFC (United States) - they were one of the best teams and also my favourite MLS team.
Liverpool (England) - Should have been Manchester City, but they weren't in ECS.
Milan (Italy) - Should have been Juventus, but they are Piedmonte in FIFA 20, so chose Milan.
Molde FK (Norway)
Monterrey (Mexico)
Newcastle Jets (Australia) - There were better teams, but they're my Aussie team.
Shamrock Rovers (Ireland)
SK Rapid Wien (Austria)
Sparta Praha (Czech Republic - Czechoslovakia)
Spartak Moscow (Russia)
Toronto FC (Canada)
Uni. Catolica (Chile)
Yokohama F.M (Japan) - One of the best teams, but they're my favourite J League team.
The format is exactly the same as the WTS tournament, and simmed all the way through.
Round 1:
Liverpool vs Toronto FC
Cardiff City vs Uni. Catolica
Monterrey vs Buenos Aires
Yokohama F.M vs HJK Helsinki
Spartak Moscow vs Kaizer Chiefs
FC Seoul vs Newcastle Jets - an all Asian affair!
Molde FK vs Club Brugge
SK Rapid Wien vs Guangzhou
FC Bayern vs FC Midtjylland
Shamrock Rovers vs FCSB
Al Ahli vs Celtic
Ajax vs FC Barcelona
Al Ain FC vs AS Monaco
LAFC vs America de Cali
Milan vs Gremio
Dinamo Zagreb vs Sparta Praha
Results:
Liverpool 9-1 Toronto FC
Cardiff City 3-7 Uni. Catolica
Monterrey 1-6 Buenos Aires

Club Brugge 5-2 Guangzhou - The last Asian team out!
FC Bayern 9-0 FCSB
Celtic 0-6 FC Barcelona
AS Monaco 6-1 LAFC - The last North American team out!
Milan 5-1 Dinamo Zagreb
Quarter Finals:
Liverpool vs Buenos Aires
Spartak Moscow vs Club Brugge
FC Bayern vs FC Barcelona
AS Monaco vs Milan

Results:
Liverpool 6-2 Club Brugge

Final:
Liverpool vs FC Barcelona
Result:
Liverpool 1-3 FC Barcelona
So the Soccer Superbowl is locked in!
France vs FC Barcelona
Seeing this is a North American game, I set the final in Los Angeles. The Rose Bowl, which held the 1994 World Cup final, isn't in FIFA 20 so I settled for Dignity Health Sports Park, home of the LA Galaxy.
Result:
France 0-1 FC Barcelona
Congratulations to Barcelona, Soccer Superbowl 2020 champions!
I enjoyed putting this together! Although the format is different, it gives me a bit of a feel for what the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States will be like next year, and yes, I will be calling the final of that tournament the "Soccer Superbowl".
I have an idea to recreate ECS in FIFA 20 now, but with a bit of a twist...
